What is volcano snail?

Volcano Snail (Scaly-foot Gastropod)

The volcano snail, scientifically known as Chrysomallon squamiferum, also called the scaly-foot gastropod, is a unique species of deep-sea snail found exclusively in hydrothermal vent fields in the Indian Ocean. These vents are located at extreme depths, typically between 2,400 and 2,800 meters (7,900 and 9,200 feet).

  • Habitat: Its habitat is restricted to active hydrothermal%20vent fields.

  • Shell: Its shell has three layers, with the outer layer containing iron sulfides.

  • Foot: The foot is covered with iron sulfide scales. This is what gives it its common name. Its foot also serves to detoxify the water it is in.

  • Conservation Status: It's currently listed as Endangered due to its extremely limited habitat and threats from deep-sea mining. The small number of identified locations means that the snails are highly vulnerable to extinction if their habitat is disturbed.
